Control over these boundaries is a key measure of effective sovereignty, and they define the recognised limits of government authority as well as exercising a strong psychological influence. In the post-Cold War era, despite the development of organisations such as the EU and the growing trend towards globalisation, international boundaries have become more rather than less important. Approximately three in every four conflicts is concerned, whether directly or indirectly, with boundary issues. Written by an international expert on geopolitics, this publication provides assessments and maps for every currently recognised international state in the world and their dependencies, giving detailed descriptions of the international land and, where applicable, maritime boundaries. It also includes the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, the main components of the proposed new state of Palestine. Each entry considers factors relevant to the stability of the state's boundaries, providing an overall evaluation of national boundary vulnerability.
