Description

Abstract: Whether breastfeeding is a satisfying experience depends upon interactions between mother, father and baby. Feelings and family relationships are as important to its success as are nursing techniques. Couples should share this experience just as they shared their child's birth. This interaction is central to whether or not a woman wants to and actually can breastfeed her baby. With this focus on communication, information on all aspects of breastfeeding is addressed to both new parents. The spontaneous physiological process of lactation, and the positive effects of breastfeeding on the newborn's development are discussed. The components of breast milk, and how they are changed by diet and drugs, are examined. Mothers are advised how to put the baby at the breast in the hour after birth, at the hospital, and at home. Ways of adapting breastfeeding to meet the individual needs of each mother and baby are suggested. Other topics explore the baby's sleeping cycles; nursing difficulties; sex; the older baby; and social, psychological and ecological issues in breastfeeding.
