This book examines poems written by four writers whose poems accurately and faithfully represent the real world. These writers-John Clare, an early nineteenth-century English poet and naturalist, and three later poets who looked to him at pivotal moments in their own careers: Arthur Symons, an avant garde poet and theorist of fin-de-siäle decadence; Edmund Blunden, a World War I poet and memoirist; and John Ashbery, the foremost poet of contemporaryAmerican letters--depict the goings on of everyday life, especially the rhythms of nature. This theoretically and historically informed study is written in a lively style and is accessible to non-specialistreaders. Weiner's attentive close readings bring the poems she examines to life by revealing precisely how they captured a vital, arresting, and complex world. Clare's Lyric refines our understanding of realism in literature, the aesthetic of Romanticism, and the genre of lyric, and it makes a compelling case for the ongoing importance of poems about the natural world.
