In 1937 when she is fourteen, she starts work in a woollen mill and outstrips her peers to become an accomplished and knowledgeable employee. Her first marriage produces a golden-haired boy who becomes her rock after her husband's premature death. Paul is a bright lad who falls in love with Mark Crowther, the son of the owner of the mill where his mother works. As the years go on, Sarah marries William Crowther after the demise of his wife. But there are many difficulties ahead for this woman who will eventually build an empire after starting her working life as a humble mill girl.
