Reports and analyzes results of interviews with 45 self-identified female-to-male transsexuals. Devor (sociology, U. of Victoria) focuses on the processes by means of which people come to identify themselves as members of a seemingly incongruous social group and them remake their lives so that they function as apparently native- born members of the group. She concludes that most issues confronted by transsexuals are neither theoretically nor practically distinct from those faced by other members of society.
