Description

Excerpt from Master Johann Dietz, Surgeon in the Army of the Great Elector and Barber to the Royal Court: From the Old Manuscript in the Royal Library of BerlinNo biography has hitherto been known which could tell us, with the least approximation to the detail contained in the following autobiography of Master Johann Dietz, of the homely, middle-class life of the second half of the seventeenth century, down to the accession of Frederick the Great. Consequently the publication of this old-world manuscript is a landmark in the history of civilization.Master Johann Dietz was a member of the guild of barbers. Much as he had seen of the world, his life - as was usual in the case of craftsmen - was divided into his apprenticeship, his years of journeyman wandering, and, finally, his full member ship as master of his guild, which coincided, in time, with his marriage. The licensed barber, who was also a licensed surgeon, remained a master to the end of his days.In those days the learned physician did not perform operations these were essentially the barber's business. Medical knowledge was divided between the doctor, whose studies taught him how to treat the sick for internal disorders, and the barber, who filled the office of a surgeon. Of course, in case of need the barber was often compelled, for better or worse, to fill the place of his learned colleague, for the barber was as a rule more quickly available than the learned doctor.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
