Description

Excerpt from Fort Pulaski National Monument, Georgia Fearing an attack by their perennial enemies at St. Augustine during the French and Indian War, Colonial leaders advocated the construction of a fort on Cockspur Island to protect the growing port at Savannah. As a result Fort George, a palisaded log blockhouse and earthen fortification, was begun on Cockspur in 1761. This pioneer fortification upon Cockspur served as a protection for Savan nah harbor and intermittently enforced quaran tine and customs regulations until 1776, when it was abandoned upon the approach Of the British fleet.
