In 1995 more than 100 historians gathered at the University of Notre Dame for a conference convened to honor distinguished American historian Vincent P. De Santis. From that conference comes this timely collection of essays that describes and defines the true state of political history at the end of the twentieth century. The contributors, all historians of the first rank, consider the criticisms that have been levied against political history in the past decades (elitist, out of touch with reality) and discuss what insights the discipline still produces, what methodologies it uses, and what its future direction should be. Their essays clearly demonstrate how vibrant the field of political history is and how different current approaches are from past emphases on campaigns, elections, and terms of office.
