But when Jackson became President of the United States he ordered the Cherokees removed to the Indian Territory. That was in 1838. The Cherokees were rounded up like cattle and driven westward, of them dying on the road. A little handful of Cherokees in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina escaped. Their leader was Tsali and his sons; they were all murdered but their resistance enabled a few of their com rades to hide in the mountains and elude the searching soldiers.
