Description
A hybrid of genres, Bar Book uses cocktails as a jumping off point in a collage of voices that collectively explore the ethics, economics, craft and consequences of service. The narrator, a barmaid, grapples with irreconcilable differences in her work and personal life. At work, she's torn between taking orders and keeping order. The bar business demands she be eager to please while it holds her responsible for maintaining control of a potentially chaotic, even dangerous environment. She must be both master and servant to earn her living, yet the two roles are wary bedfellows. In addition to poems, Bar Book multi-tasks its way through a range of means by which we organize information: a balance sheet, a Cosmo-style quiz, forms, an FAQ and bullet points - everything and the kitchen sink! - make appearances here in this archeology of modern love, this sozzled scrap book.
