This paper examines the twenty-first century film Django Unchained in order to explore how the self or the fashioning of one's self be can mobilized to secure uninterrupted mobility, whether physical, economic, or political. The issue this paper is most interested in is that the system of circulation that subjugates humans perpetuates proslavery ideology through shaping public perception regarding the status of the slave through violent and judicial means. However, the character analyzed engineers physical transformations---through changing speech, attire, and habits---that grant him degrees of agency he uses to manipulate public perception and suspend laws that would otherwise persist in enslaving his body.
