Description

"The purpose of this 6-week action research study was to investigate whether multicultural literature is an effective tool in developing first-grade students' cultural and racial competence. The research questions included: 1) How would students respond to multicultural literature? 2) Would those student responses to literature be sufficient in measuring changes in their racial and cultural competency? And, 3) Which aspects of the multicultural education program would the students find most interesting and resonating? Lessons were designed around multicultural children's literature and were implemented over the course of six weeks in a first-grade classroom. Both qualitative and quantitative data was collected through pre- and post-surveys, pre- and post- rubrics, and researcher field notes. Results indicated that students' awareness of cultural and racial differences and similarities increased during the multicultural program, but also that some children demonstrated a degree of cultural bias."--Abstract, p. 1.
