Description
This classic book teaches internal medicine by discussing the major presenting symptoms and signs of disease. Symptoms and signs are the raw material of medicine, this is how patients confront doctors on their first day in the wards as students and for the rest of their professional lives. Each chapter discusses a common symptom or sign, providing an approach towards the differential diagnosis of the patient's complaint, based on the clinical evidence and ancillary investigations. Where necessary, basic principles of medicine and physiology are discussed to clarify the rationale of investigations. At the end of each chapter is a clinical problem with questions designed to test the reader. This is followed by a detailed explanation of the correct approach to the case. The method of teaching adopted in this book is particularly valuable to those studying for clinical qualifying or postgraduate examinations. In this Fourth Edition the text has been completely revised and includes new chapters on chronic fatigue, haematuria, stroke and movement disorders. A greater number of diagnostic algorithms have also been included. Book jacket.
