Published three years after A Ten Year?s War, The Battle with the Slum is the sequel to Riis? How the Other Half Lives. This book is a collection of Riis? stories that were first published in the Century Magazine. The book picks up where Riis? other books leave off, and it documents the changes and advancements that took place since the publications of his other pieces.??In the book, Riis explores many aspects of life in the slums. He documents the lives of slum children, immigrants and other minorities, and he explores the efforts that charitable organizations have made in trying to improve living conditions for the poor. In addition to providing an account of Riis? personal experience, the book also includes Riis? own photographs of the New York City slums which sheds new light on what life in the tenements was like.
The Battle with the Slum
The Battle with the Slum / by Jacob A. Riis
They drag one another always farther down. The bad environment becomes the heredity of the next generation. Then, given the crowd, you have the slum ready-made. The battle with the slum began the day civilization recognized in it her enemy.
That I have tried to do in this book, retaining all that still applied of the old volume and adding as much more. The stories were printed in the Century Magazine. They are fact, not fiction. If the latter, they would have no place here.
