Description

Abstract: The purpose of this work is to provide the reader with a foundation for comparing theories of child development while acquainting the reader with key aspects of the theories presented. The author, recognizing there are more theories than can be addressed in a single work, has selected those theories that meet three criteria: 1) the theory has been popular; 2) the theory has been influential and ; 3) the theory is representative of a class of family of theories. Chapter One defines terms and describes standards or criteria often used to distinguish "good theory" from "bad theory". Chapter Two focuses on the content characteristics of child development theories. Chapters Three through Sixteen capture key aspects of better known theories categorized as: theories from the past; developmental; psychoanalytic; language and thought; behaviorist; humanist. The theories of Piaget, Freud, Havighurst, Gesell, Vygotsky, Kohlberg and others are included.
