Description

Direct measurements of complex interactions across aqueous solution are presented in this dissertation. Hydrophobic interactions are among the most important nonspecific interactions in biological and colloidal systems, as well as in many industrial applications. Pressure solution is a much observed but seldom understood phenomena that may have important ties to industrial processes such as chemical-mechanical polishing. Interactions between bilayers and glass surfaces are significant in attempts to mimic and model biomembranes and cellular systems. Direct force measurements were carried out on each of these three systems using the Surface Forces Apparatus (SFA). These systems, while seemingly unrelated, share one common thread: all three represent fundamental interactions across aqueous solution that have major implications for biological and industrial applications. The aim of the research presented here was to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms governing these important interactions.
