Darcy James is a social worker who volunteers her time at a local soup kitchen, serving hot meals and warm smiles to the less fortunate people in her hometown of Needham, Massachusetts. When Joey McDonald shows up at the soup kitchen to volunteer one weekend, she admires his strong compassion for others and they become close friends. They fall in love and soon, make plans for marriage. When the elderly owner falls ill, he turns the soup kitchen over to Joey and Darcy and they decide to turn it into a homeless shelter. The people they come in contact with over the years leave a lasting impression on them. When tragedy strikes, Joey and Darcy come to lean on the very foundation they have built over the years. Christmas in July is a story of true love, compassion, and a driving force that keeps two people together.
