This volume is the first book-length study to apply the insights of postcolonial studies to the letters of the apostle Paul and brings together in one comprehensive collection some of the most important scholars applying postcolonialism to biblical studies today. Paul's letters have been largely neglected in the recent move toward postcolonial analysis of the Bible. This book aims to remedy that deficiency. The book consists of a series of essays written by scholars who use postcolonial studies on a regular basis in their study of Paul and his letters. Some are established scholars, but most are younger scholars, reflecting the newness of the methodologies that are applied throughout the volume. This provides a rich array of scholarship and perspective in a field that has grown quickly in importance and scope. The essays are divided into three sections. The essays in the first section offer a broad overview of the field of postcolonial studies for readers who know little about the discipline. The essays in the second section focus on the historical Paul, asking how the methods and insights of postcolonial studies might help us to better understand his life and letters within the context of Roman colonialism. Special attention is given to Paul's treatments of ethnicity and gender. The essays in the third section explore some of the ways in which Paul's letters have been appropriated and applied in modern colonial and postcolonial settings, including the world of Pauline scholarship. All of the contributors have indicated that there is a great need for a volume of this type and this collection is sure to serve as an essential resource for scholars and students alike.
