The Sierra Gateway Trust is pleased to offer this book, our first educational effort in support of the Scenic Highway designation of Highway 180 from the Kings River in the San Joaquin Valley to Zumwalt Meadow at the far eastern end of Kings Canyon.In the following almost three hundred pages you will find the stories of our area's early explorers, pioneers, city-builders, and others, many in their own words, using never-before-published mater-ials found in libraries, private homes, and the rarely visited archives of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Several dozen people helped with this, a team effort if there ever was one.We tell of the many centuries when the only human inhabitants here were the Yokuts and the Western Monos. Then we cover the 54 years of Spanish rule, the 24 years of Mexican rule, and the now 175 years of American rule.Two world-class never before photographed collections of Yokuts and Western Mono woven baskets are shown here in Chapter VI and all of Chapter VII is devoted to the amazing wildflower photo-graphs of acclaimed artist/photographer Pamela Coz-Hill. Sprinkled amongst all of this are the stories of Reedley's Mennonites, Sanger's lumber flume, and a series of wineries, each in its time the largest in the world and all within a stone's throw of our road.
