mortar & pestle is a short collection of short stories and free-verse poetry leaning towards surrealism. Laiden with unconventional imagery and time jumps in narration, B. Medina's short stories depict the lives of various Mexican-American characters living in inner-city areas within the United States. Herself a Mexican-American born and raised in Texas, the author deliberately intertwines English and Spanish (English translations are included) to tell the stories of characters she describes as "half-breeds" struggling to understand their biculturalism in America.
