Description

The Pacific water shrew, Sorex bendirii, is the largest North American shrew. Its historical range is limited to lowland riparian forests and marshes in western North America. In Canada, the species is restricted to the Fraser lowland of south-western British Columbia. This report reviews the conservation status of this species. It includes information on the shrew's geographic distribution, population size and trends, protection status, habitat, general biology, factors limiting the shrew population size and distribution, and the special significance of the species for Canada. Concludes with discussion of the current consensus regarding the status of the species and a proposed conservation designation.
