This book is aimed at the beginning student. We have assumed no prior knowledge of communication processes. New terminology is defined when used, and we have tried to avoid jargon. For example, we avoid systems theory terminology as much as possible even though the basic assumptions throughout the book come from that theoretical position, and the book attempts to help the student apply this theoretical approach to interpersonal communication.
