On July 8, 1497, Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama sailed to India, the fabled land of spices and oriental treasures. He returned two years later, completing one of history's most daring voyages - -a 27,000-mile journey that propelled Portugal to the forefront of international commerce and not only expanded the known world but changed it. For 75 years Portugal sent out one ship after another, searching for a sea passage to the Orient. This was the first national effort for exploration, and Vasco da Gama succeeded in finding the way, enabling Portugal to develop an enormously wealthy trading empire. Illustrated with beautiful color photos., this is the companion book to the PBS documentary.
