But our solutions -- including building more prisons & giving criminals longer sentences -- don't seem to be working. We have been very poor in diagnosing what causes violence, what spreads it, & what we might do to prevent it. Now, for the first time, this book makes sense of it all. Gilligan has discovered that shame is the deadly emotion. Shame works to deaden the feelings of being human, & it is the breeding ground of rage. His lifetime experience with the criminally insane has given him a unique viewpoint. He argues that understanding the causes of the violence epidemic is the first step toward stemming it.
