Evaluates physiological response to hooking/playing and hooking/holding (on stringers) stress. Stress imposed under standardized conditions. Blood clotting time was used as index of non-specific physiological stress response. Plasma chloride & hematocrit were used to evaluate osmoregulatory changes & gill ion exchange function. Plasma glucose & plasma cholesterol were used to evaluate changes in carbohydrate & lipid metabolism. Both types of stress produced significant changes in each blood parameter measured, but did not cause any mortality. Physiolo gical responses during recovery phase were very apparent in blood clotting time, hematocrit & plasma glucose.
