Description

It is an old science: In 1693 Edmund Halley analyzed records from the city of Breslau and found the life expectancy at birth was 33 years and the life expectancy of an 80-year-old person was six years. In 1993, in the United States, life expectancy at birth was nearly 76 years; however the life expectancy of an 80-year-old had risen only to 89 years, a gain of three in 300 years.
Through charts and tables, this reference work presents a statistical look at life expectancy and death rates in the United States in the 20th century. In Part I, the author illustrates the significant advancements through the century in life expectancy from birth, but also shows that as people age medical advances have far fewer effects on lengthening life. Part II examines the death rates at different ages for men and women, and various causes of death. In Part III the death rates for cardiovascular diseases are fully covered, and in Part IV the rates for cancer are detailed. Part V provides a statistical basis for predicting future factors that will impact the overall death rate.
