Until recently, sulphur (S) was a seen but not heard ubiquitous stepchild. Now it has been transformed into a scientific Cinderella due to public concerns about pollution-induced climate change and forest decline, which have stimulated research on the physiological functions of S in plants, on its availability in soils, and on the chemistry of S-compounds in the tropo- and stratosphere. The seven papers treat: the diagnosis of S-nutrition, the soil sulphur cycle, S-fertilization, the plant sulphur cycle, and a global overview of the S-situation: industry's background, market trends (graphed), and commercial aspects of S fertilizers.
