Description
A noted Lutheran pastor and theologian from New York City, Neuhaus surveys American religious currents during the past twenty years. Maintaining that the naked public square, which results from the exclusion of popular values from the public forum, will result in the death of democracy, he calls for the reconstruction of a public philosophy grounded in values based in Judeo-Christian religion and suggests that democratic theory and practice must be legitimated in terms compatible with Biblical faith. He sees a battle raging among evangelicals, fundamentalists and Catholics to become the new shaping force of culture, distrusts the religious right whose authoritarian tactics foster personality cults and is also critical of educators who ignore the religious dimensions of experience.
