Within the broader context of the latter 20th century Christian liturgical reform movement, Quill (parish pastor, Drew U., NJ) examines recent American Lutheran identity and practice. Paralleling upheaval in society generally and within the Roman Catholic Church particularly, the Lutheran Church produced the new Lutheran Book of Worship (1979) and the Missouri Synod published Lutheran Worship (1984). Developing a common Lutheran book of liturgy/hymnody required reconciling divergent theological streams and diverse ethnic and national traditions--as Quill expounds in his chronicling of the origins of the liturgical movement, its influences on texts and the Eucharist Prayer, and prior failure to produce a pan-Lutheran book of worship.
