Paris in the Age of Impressionism captures the excitement of late nineteenth-century Paris as an explosion of new ideas made the city the capital of the art world. Paris in the Age of Impressionism includes more than a hundred superb objects from all areas of the Musée d'Orsay's vast collections, including paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, works on paper, and photographs. Paris becomes a great modern city in paintings by Monet and Caillebotte and in outstanding turn-of-the-century photographs. Portraits and scenes by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Tissot, and Fantin-Latour give a glimpse of Parisian high society. Fascinating designs for the Opéra and other historic performance spaces show Paris as a city of grand theaters. The dark side of the City of Light is revealed in paintings by Degas, Caillebotte, and Lautrec and in sculpture by Dalou. The construction and celebration of the Eiffel Tower is recalled in vintage photographs, designs, lithographs, and memorabilia. The stylistic revolution of Art Nouveau is evoked in the designs of Lalique and Gallé. The great surge of the avant-garde is signaled in works by van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, Rodin, and Rousseau.
