"This book (a fiction of sorts) attempts to explore the questions, concerns, and considerations raised in looking at a selection of photographs by women, to suggest how that work has affected, influenced, and shaped the language of photography, and to reveal a fascinating episode in the development of the medium. Assembling such a body of work required the tenacity of a private eye, relentlessly ferreting out and searching through collections, tracking down leads, examining evidence, and shamelessly preying upon knowledgeable people. My intention was to bring to light relatively obscure names like Maria Chambefort, Anna Atkins, Lady Filmer, Lucy Fleming, and Louise Deshong Woodbridge from the last century, and Madame Yevonde, Margaret Watkins, Alma Lavenson, Marjorie Content, and Aenne Biermann from the earlier part of this century. I wanted to publish lesser known work by such famous artists as Gertrude Käsebier, Imogen Cunningham, Margaret Bourke-White, Berenice Abbott, and Dorothea Lange, as well as present the landmark modern work of Helen Levitt and Diane Arbus with important and emerging contemporary photography."--Préface.
