Clutching my bachelor's degree in one hand and a newly minted teacher's certificate in the other, I stood in a fever of desperation before the manager of the employment agency. Luckily, the manager of the employment agency found a teaching position for young Verl Crow and thus began a teaching and administration career that spanned 38 years in the Iowa school system. Tales Out of School traces her transition from teaching a handful of students in a one-room country school to serving as assistant principal and guidance counselor for a student body of hundreds in a large urban junior high school. Filled with humorous reminiscences, Tales Out of School emphasizes the special relationships that develop between teachers and students.
