The Crawford House in Motecito, California, completed in 1991, is one of the msot stunning projects designed by the maverick Los Angeles firm Morphosis. With its breathtaking site overlooking the Pacific Ocean near Santa Barbara, its multiple axes and contexts, and its assemblage of geometric forms and generic materials - concrete pylons, exposed steel, redwood siding, and copper panels - the house is considered a case study in contemporary architecture. This beautifully designed monograph documents the house in a series of newly commissioned, richly detailed color and duotone photographs, carefully arranged to express the house's subtle allure and complexity. The photographs follow an introductory critical essay exploring the changing implications of domesticity and of houses conceived and constructed as art. A concluding section printed on custom paper reproduces project sketches selected by Morphosis principal Thom Mayne. This is the first volume to showcase the Crawford House; it is emblematic of the dynamic interplay between art, architecture, and representation that characterizes Morphosis' work. -- from back cover.
