New competitive models and a step-change in the capability and potential of learning technology are creating opportunities and imperatives for improving the effectiveness of learning delivery. There is a shift in focus to the individual learner. To assist human resource professionals manage this transition, this report reviews what is currently known about learning. Findings include: - the major theoretical stances on learning are structured within four 'clusters' that describe what is common in human learning; - learning is deeply affected by the context in which it occurs; - e-learning has defined a new paradigm for learning: a way of working, studying and problem-solving that reflects the growing connectivity of people and learning resources. This research report is intended to raise the level of debate - demystifying a complex topic - and to provide a better platform for considered action in the organisation.
