Description

This book formulates a theory of student learning, which together with the SPQ instrument deriving from it, has important implications for teaching at the university & college level. Students facing a learning task, implicitly or explicitly, ask themselves two basic questions: What do I intend to get from this learning task? How do I go about it? The answer to the first says something about a student's motives; to the second, something about a student's strategies; together they comprise the student's general approach to learning. The SPQ questionnaire was developed to identify these motives & strategies - classifying them into surface, deep, achieving of deep-achieving. The resulting process perspective on how students typically handle academic tasks can be invaluable to teachers in developing teaching strategies; & to counselors & mentors helping students with problems of learning & studying. The SPQ instrument is easy & convenient to administer & score, & its interpretation & use is based on carefully researched by east-to-grasp theory.
