Pre-trial or remand services are facilities provided by the Probation Service aimed at reducing the number of unnecessary or inappropriate remands in custody. They include bail information, bail support and bail hostels (or other community based accommodation). Research involved a literature survey encompassing written material about pre-trial services in Europe, the United States and Australia, and a national survey with representatives from probation services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
