On 24 March 1663, England's King Charles II granted to eight of his most loyal supporters all of the territory in North America between 31 degrees and 36 degrees north latitude from the present-day Georgia-Florida boundary northward to the middle of Albemarle Sound and from the Atlantic Ocean westward to the "South Seas" (Pacific Ocean). These eight men--Edward Hyde; George Monck; William Craven; John Berkeley; Anthony Ashley Cooper; Sir George Carteret; Sir William Berkeley; and Sir John Colleton--were designated as "Lords Proprietors" of this new province of "Carolina." In this fascinating and informative book, William Powell presents the historical context and significance of the 1663 Carolina Charter and the story of the lengthy and successful authentication process conducted in the late 1940s following the document's "discovery" by an English antiquarian bookseller. Powell also provides biographical sketches of the eight Lords Proprietors and a transcription of the entire text of the four-page document.
