The dental profession has become extremely effective in managing most forms of acute orofacial pain, but orofacial pain of a chronic or pathologic nature is more problematic. To diagnose and manage such pain disorders effectively, the clinician must have a solid understanding of the processes underlying these disorders. Completely revised and updated, this version of Dr. Welden Bell's classic text, Orofacial Pains, provides the framework necessary for understanding the pain mechanism. It presents a classification system for orofacial pain disorders, including pain of cutaneous, mucogingival, dental, TMJ, muscular, visceral, neurovascular, neuropathic, and psychological origin. The differential diagnostic and therapeutic considerations for each classification are described.
