Abstract: Ten informative reports examine a variety of issues for ensuring good health through preventive medicine, reducing life style risk factors, and sound nutritional practices. The reports are intended to keep journalists, health professionals, and the general public aware of developing issues, events, and trends in public health maintenance. Topics include: concepts of staying healthy; the rising costs of health care; the characteristics, increasing incidence, and treatment of chronic pain; the US obsession with weight control; the current status of mental health care; new developments in cancer treatment; the controversies over salt (sodium) and caffeine intakes; recent developments in sleep research; and stress management.
