Description
A family chronicle, interspersed with personal reflections on Germany and its Jews. Hofstein was born in 1921 in Berlin to a Jewish family (Schlesinger); in July 1939 she and her mother emigrated to the USA. Her father survived the war in the Netherlands, to which he had emigrated in 1933, with his second (non-Jewish) wife. Hofstein's maternal grandmother, Jenny Pelz, died in Auschwitz in 1944. Pp. 42-108 present correspondence of Hofstein and her mother with close relatives left behind in Germany, especially her grandmother. Hofstein's recollections and her relatives' letters portray, inter alia, Jewish life in Nazi Berlin.
