Description

This booklet presents educational programs and activities for perceptual training of 4- to 9-year-olds and older children with learning and reading problems. The development of visual and auditory perception needs to be understood as closely related to and dependent upon other developmental areas, including motor, language, thinking, emotional, and social skills. The booklet's first section presents general information on children's perceptual training, sensory channels and integration, the tactile/kinesthetic channels, and activities for investigating and training cross-modality functioning. The second section addresses training for visual perception in the areas of: hand-eye coordination; form perception; visual discrimination; visual memory and sequencing; visual rhythm; visual closure and completion; visual temporal sequencing; and figure-ground relationships. The third section presents activities for auditory perception in the areas of: auditory discrimination; auditory memory and sequencing; auditory rhythm; auditory closure; auditory figure-ground discrimination; and auditory imagery. The final sections present: information on use of the overhead projector in perceptual training; a form for recording students' progress through the perceptual training activities; and a list of catalogs providing equipment for activities.
