"Christian asceticism is deeply imbricated in both the power of self-transformation and the divine grace through which it is realized. This study seeks to explore the strategies that enabled ascetics in the Egyptian, Gazan, and Sinaitic monastic traditions of late antiquity to alter their innate nature, even to cultivate a new form of existence, in the face of a self under constant assault by hostile, demonic powers and unable to control its own inner motions. The forms and practices of asceticism at the centre of this study come to encompass these challenges through a disciplined, systematic effort to train and purify not only the body but also the mind and its powers of attention."--
