Grassland Plants of South Dakota & the Northern Great Plains is a color-illustrated guide with 358 photographs covering 292 vascular plant species residing in the Great Plains grasslands in & around South Dakota. Native, weedy exotics, & agricultural forage species are included. Plants are categorized into three major groups: grasses & grass-likes (79 species), forbs (181 species) & common native shrubs & trees (32 species). Within these groups, subjects are arranged alphabetically by scientific names of the family & the species. Each entry includes a description of the plant & its habitat, an account of regional & worldwide distribution, & information about plant values to wildlife, livestock, & human cultures, past & present. A major vegetation map of the Great Plains, north of Oklahoma, is included in an introductory section.
