The story of Dorothy Scarritt McKibbin who was the gatekeeper to the Manhattan Project and in Los Alamos, New Mexico during World War II. Her office in Santa Fe was the entry point for all the scientists, technicians and their families to came in utmost secrecy to the isolated plateau in Northern New Mexico to build the "gadget" that would change the course of the war. She was their one contact with the outside world in those tense, highly secret days and provided essential help and encouragement as they built a community in which they could attempt to lead ordinary lives under extraordianry circumstances.
