Mary Harris was born in Ireland and came to the U.S. when she was 5 years old. She was trained as a teacher and by 1867 she was married with four children. When a fever struck one by one her four children and her husband died. In 1871 she became involved in the labor movement and spent the next sixty years working to make working conditions better for miners and mill workers. Her autobiography offers a glimpse into the labor movement of the 19th and early 20 centuries.
