Innocence Lost is the second book in the Sammy Jo White Mystery Series. In Innocence Lost, Beverly Hills P.I., Sammy Jo White, aka Sam, finds herself on a mission of life and death. Chris Girardi, a nineteen-year old American citizen, was arrested at the Islamabad Airport in Pakistan, accused of smuggling Opium, by hiding the drugs inside leather garments he was hired to transport to the United States. Chris professed to be innocent, saying he didn't know about the drugs, and his mother, Gayle Girardi, believed his only crime was being naive. Sam's job was to find Taj, the alleged Armenian man who hired Chris to transport the leather, and persuade him to tell the truth, and admit that Chris had no knowledge of the drugs. Not an easy thing to do, since Taj wasn't his real name. The DEA, who was supposed to be investigating the case, was short on manpower, and also lacked the resolve to pursue Taj, since they assumed Chris to be guilty. To them the case wasn't a priority. To Chris Girardi however, time was critical. In Pakistan, drug smuggling is considered to be one of the worst crimes, and punishment is usually by hanging. While Chris Girardi was squandering away in a Pakistani prison, ripe with putrid conditions, awaiting sentencing; Taliban and Al Qaeda members, who were also inside the jail, were plotting ways to have him killed just because he was an American. After Sam found Taj, and agreed to turn him over to Mike Robiteaux, the DEA Agent in charge of the case, she found herself and anyone close to her, on the hit list of local terrorists. What Sam uncovered during her search for Taj, convinced her that Taj wasn't just an ordinary drug smuggler, trying to make a profit. He was part of an Islamic group, responsible for financing the recruitment and training of individuals, with the intention of carrying out a terrorist attack, and trying to impose the Shari`a (Islamic Sacred Law) right here in the United States. Now it was up to Sam, and her new friend DEA Agent Mike Robiteaux, to put together a task force and stop the attacks, before hundreds of innocent Americans were killed. And if fighting terrorists wasn't enough; Sam also had to deal with the petty jealousies of her ex-boyfriend, Detective John Barone. Now that she was determined to move on with her life, and open up her heart to someone new, Barone was doing everything possible to win her back...
