Two friends and their classmates are given a school assignment after a field trip to an art museum. The assignment is to learn about their community and then to create a masterpiece.Hector and Amanda walk through their community with a red wagon, collecting materials for their masterpiece. The trip takes them to many places, including the library and to the oldest oak tree in town where they begin their project. The two children enlist the help of friends and neighbors to create their work of art. They discover their community?s rich diversity and a spirit of giving from the many people they encounter along the way. The two friends work together, just like Ms. Berger, Mr. Todd, the mayor, Ms. Lopez and other members of their community they meet on their journey.Included at the end of the book are suggested learning activities for teachers, students and families that encourage active participation and creative thinking.
