The Golden age of radio brought with it Jane Froman, whose incredible voice captivated listeners and made her America's preeminent songstress. Classically trained to sing opera, she opted instead to bring her silkem voice and skillful technique to popular music. In 1943, en route to entertain troops for the USO, her plane crashed, leaving her with severe injuries. On crutches, she returned to Europe to sing for the GIs. Her amazing comeback was potrayed in the movie, With a Song in My Heart, leading to her own television show in 1952. For four decades, Jane Froman sang the songs that became known as the Great American Songbook.
