A guide to the traditional Norfolk Island art of plaiting. Our people brought with them the everyday art of plaiting on their arrival to Norfolk Island in 1856. Each Pacific Island has a different approach to their own art of plaiting. In such an isolated situation, each islands' plait is mainly characterised by its creative use of limited materials. Throughout the history of plaiting we can see that Norfolk Islanders are resourceful people, collecting moo-oo from the sides of cliffs, banana bark and corn husk from vegetable gardens, flax from creeks and palms from just about any corner of the island. This book guides you through the fundamentals of plaiting and ways to create your own plait. Plaiting has been a part of Norfolk Island history for over 150 years. A treasure tradition handed down to me, I feel privileged in being able to pass it on to future generations.
