Description

This book examines the events that took place at the Harmon farm before, during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. The farm was positioned between the Union and Confederate lines during the Battle on July 1, 1863. During the second of two Confederate attacks, soldiers burned the house and barn. In an effort to recover from the destruction of his land, Emanuel Harmon introduced the public to a "medicinal" spring located on the property. Soon the Katalysine Spring was famous and in 1868, a hotel was built near the site to accommodate its many visitors. Its waters also were bottled and shipped out of state. Eventually the spring was closed and the site became the location of the Gettysburg Country Club which was frequented by Dwight D. Eisenhower.
